Woof Woof! I hear a barking Dog!

by Donna Hemann

When summer arrives we all gratefully spend more time outdoors. Barbecues, driveway and patio get togethers with friends, gardening and swim parties naturally move us outside. Dogs often get moved outside too, and if left out for many hours can create a frustrating disturbance to neighbors.

Here's what you need to know about handling this issue:

The Law:

Springfield Municipal Code Chapter 78, Sections 78-113 prohibit the creation of unusually loud or disturbing noise, including noise from animals, that threatens peace or good order.

What to Do:

Talk to Your Neighbor - If you believe it is safe and you are comfortable doing so, it is recommended to talk to your neighbor first. All situations are different, so use your best judgment. If the problem is not resolved, reach out to local offices listed below.

During the day contact Animal Control, 417.833.3592. They enforce animal-related ordinances and issue citations for violations. An Animal Control Officer must witness the violation to issue a citation, but citizens can become a witness. The Neighborhood Toolbox Brochure recommends contacting the Springfield Police Department during night hours. The non-emergency number is 417.864.1810. In case of an emergency involving an animal call 911 immediately.

Report Online - To report a problem online you can do so at www.springfieldmo.gov (The City's website), through the City Resource Center at 417.864.1010 (employees will take the information and file the report for you), or download the GoSpringfieldMO app from your Apple or Android app store.
